Influences?

As I scan through the myriad of articles on the Iowa caucuses and flip through the TV stations for coverage, I am always amused by the commentaries (written and spoken) that blame the "media" for shaping the collective conscience and thought patterns of the American people.

We are a media obsessed society.....news junkies, and social media addicts who seek to be constantly fed by what we read, see and hear about others.  Why, then, are we so quick to blame the new media for their coverage of events?  Clearly we are receiving the information we are looking for....surely if we weren't we would turn off the TV, walk away from the computer, or ignore the latest tweet.

Perhaps blaming the media has simply become our way of shirking the responsibility of having to develop an informed opinion on our own.  Just as the teenager blames peer pressure as the reason for his bad decisions, we now hold culpable the perceived "media spin" on current events as our reason for not understanding the real issues.
