Time flies

We've lost so many from the campaign.....now here we are waiting on Florida...debates tonight.  Gingrich and Romney are really turning the guns on each other now.

I am not sure which candidate is more likely to secure a Democratic win.....I just really wish that they had produced someone that was MORE of a candidate than these two.

I miss the days of actual two party politics.

Clean?

What happened to Newt's promise of a clean campaign?  I guess it is all up in smoke since Romney's negative PAC-funded ads in Iowa.

It's going to be unfortunate if both candidates end up attacking each other and Santorum walks away with the win.  Santorum's truly appears to be a wild card and the more I discover about him; the less attractive he appears.  In between voting for the infamous "bridge to nowhere" and his call for potential attacks on countries with nuclear facilities; he's beginning to scare me.

I am hopeful for Hunstman in New Hampshire.  Perhaps he will have a chance to least be heard.

Who?

Well I guess we were all a bit surprised by the showing that Rick Santorum put in last night in Iowa.   I am not sure I could have told you who he was with any certainty two weeks ago......

I was also surprised by the incredibly low Republican turnout overall.  I would expect more from a group that has so vehemently decried the Democrats for the past three years.  If the Republicans are so unhappy, why aren't they showing up to the caucuses to vote for someone who is actually electable?

At least Michele Bachmann has hung up her run for the candidacy.....she will no doubt be chief contender for the VP ticket.

On to New Hampshire:  Live free or die!

Influences?

As I scan through the myriad of articles on the Iowa caucuses and flip through the TV stations for coverage, I am always amused by the commentaries (written and spoken) that blame the "media" for shaping the collective conscience and thought patterns of the American people.

We are a media obsessed society.....news junkies, and social media addicts who seek to be constantly fed by what we read, see and hear about others.  Why, then, are we so quick to blame the new media for their coverage of events?  Clearly we are receiving the information we are looking for....surely if we weren't we would turn off the TV, walk away from the computer, or ignore the latest tweet.

Perhaps blaming the media has simply become our way of shirking the responsibility of having to develop an informed opinion on our own.  Just as the teenager blames peer pressure as the reason for his bad decisions, we now hold culpable the perceived "media spin" on current events as our reason for not understanding the real issues.

New Beginnings

Here we stand again at the beginning of a New Year.  The time when we traditionally make promises to ourselves to begin a fresh new year.  A year that will enable us to lose weight, exercise, read more, learn a new language,  spend more time with family and friends and volunteer to help others.

Lately, I've been keeping up with the Republicans in Iowa.....hoping--probably against hope-- that someone within the crowd will begin to emerge as a truly viable, reliable candidate.  This morning a nationally syndicated political news program asked the Republican hopefuls to outline their New Year's resolutions.  What followed was a rather sad display of the lack of introspection within the ranks of the Republican candidates.  Romney and Perry gave politically correct answers of praying for the safe return our troops in combat.  One listed winning the caucuses in a variety of states where she likely has no chance, including Iowa.    Newt Gingrich turned to his wife with a blank look upon his face.... and in a moment reminiscent of Nancy Reagan with President Reagan,  she helped him recover by quietly filling in with "we need to work on those."  I laughed out loud when Newt dutifully repeated the words for the camera.....it easily took me back thirty years to that old Reagan team.

Perhaps the candidates did not expect to have journalists ask about something as mundane as New Year's resolutions.  Maybe once an individual has achieved a certain level of success the ability to look for self improvement wanes.  Gingrich, I am sure, has more important things to do since his numbers have dropped rather drastically in the past few days.  Good thing he had his wife there to cover for him. I wonder if in the days to come we will see more from Mrs. Gingrich.
